Dear friend of the mountain, we are talking about one of the oldest refuge of the Alps which is one of the first one built on the Italian side of the Monte Bianco. Nowadays, it has still the original structure because of the limited maintenance and adjustments.
This refuge is the testimony of the heroic climbing of the 18th century as well for its concept and realization (made possible thanks to the big efforts and great enthusiasm of the volunteers, our predecessor) as for the numerous inscriptions (several generations of the best known families of the Courmayeur guides and their clients) dating from the year of the construction and well visible on the wood panelling and on the internal shutters.
This hut is one of the four refuges built on the southern Alps and dedicated to the founder of CAI (the others refuges are on the Monte Rosa, on the Monviso and on the Dolomiti del Brenta), but it is the more epic, outlying and less frequented refuge, because it is located on a rocky outcrop at 3370 metres on the old path to Monte Bianco (15 hours of climb from Courmayer).
The Quintino Sella refuge on the Rochers of Monte Bianco, was built on 1885 by CAI under the supervision of the lawyer Francesco Gonella, costing 6.200 Italian liras.
The hut, a structure of modular wooden walls, was built in a workshop in the valley and then carried on shoulders, assembled and coated in dry stone masonry retrieved locally. It is a structure of 9 x 2,7 mt with three rooms of the same size: a central hall with kitchen and dining room plus two bedrooms on the sides with 15 beds per room.
The refuge now is in a really bad and poor condition.
The refuge stopped being visited frequently, when an easier path from the Italian Alps was opened (the Dome way, with the Gonella refuge) in 1891 but even and because of the remote location and difficulties to reach it.
Now thanks to the contributions allocated by the autonomous Region Valle d'Aosta, Banca Sella and Club4000 (which is the custody of the structure as subsection of CAI Torino), two- thirds of the 200.000 euro have been collected.
“Alp Progetti” is the Turin agency in charge of the project which consists in the disassembly and then reconstruction of the external stone coating with the insertion of insulating layers. The internal wooden walls will be only cleaned with the use of non-abrasive agents to preserve the historical traces. Same process for the floor, consolidation and insulation.
The estimation of costs includes the provision of fire extinguishers, lighting and signs, and most important the improvement of safety conditions for the access path, necessary because of the changed conditions of the glacier and rocky gully below.
During the last years the CAI of Turin was strongly involved in the renovation of numerous refuges and camps of its property. In particular, on the Monte Bianco, we should mention the replacement and technological innovations: enlargement of the Dalmazzi on Triolet refuge (and Teodulo refuge in Valtournenche) and the reconstruction of the Gonella at Dome refuge and Gervasutti hut at Grandes Jorasses.
Plus the new projects which consist in the preservation of the existing structures: the Torino refuge at the Colle del Gigante, the Boccalatte refuge at Grandes Jorasses and the Sella refuge at Rochers.
As to collect the minimum amount necessary to start operations in summer 2015, the CAI of Turin counts on the help of the Refuges National Fund of CAI, on sponsors and partners (i.e. the cultural association of “Cantieri d'alta quota”), but also on your support.
We ask you participate to the public fund raising. Even few euro can be important to help the restoration activities and to reach the goal. All donations will be listed in a benefactor register preserved by the CAI offices in Turin.
